Arrival of Celebrity Ascent at Port Everglades
On Wednesday, Port Everglades welcomed Celebrity Cruises’ latest addition to its fleet, the Celebrity Ascent. Celebrity Ascent’s arrival marks a significant milestone as the new cruise ship is one of six Celebrity ships to be homeported at Port Everglades this season.
A ceremonial plaque-and-key event was held onboard, where Port Everglades CEO and Port Director Jonathan Daniels presented a plaque to brothers and Co-Captains Dimitrios and Tasos Kafetzis. Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethge also received a special gift during the ceremony.
Additionally, Port Everglades Deputy Director Glenn Wiltshire gave challenge coins to the co-captains and Hodges Bethge, a gesture rooted in military tradition symbolizing unit pride and camaraderie.
Several dignitaries joined the event, including Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy, Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Steve Glassman, and representatives from law enforcement partners like the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The event also featured the presentation of tokens of appreciation by the co-captains of the Celebrity Ascent.
The festivities will continue with a naming ceremony scheduled for December 1 at Port Everglades, with Captain Sandy Yawn from Bravo TV’s “Below Deck” and her sister Michelle Dunham, founder of the Jacksonville School for Autism, serving as godmothers.
