Arrival of Celebrity Ascent at Port Everglades

On Wednesday, Port Everglades welcomed Celebrity Cruises’ latest addition to its fleet, the Celebrity Ascent. Celebrity Ascent’s arrival marks a significant milestone as the new cruise ship is one of six Celebrity ships to be homeported at Port Everglades this season.

A ceremonial plaque-and-key event was held onboard, where Port Everglades CEO and Port Director Jonathan Daniels presented a plaque to brothers and Co-Captains Dimitrios and Tasos Kafetzis. Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethge also received a special gift during the ceremony.

Additionally, Port Everglades Deputy Director Glenn Wiltshire gave challenge coins to the co-captains and Hodges Bethge, a gesture rooted in military tradition symbolizing unit pride and camaraderie.

Several dignitaries joined the event, including Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy, Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Steve Glassman, and representatives from law enforcement partners like the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The event also featured the presentation of tokens of appreciation by the co-captains of the Celebrity Ascent.

The festivities will continue with a naming ceremony scheduled for December 1 at Port Everglades, with Captain Sandy Yawn from Bravo TV’s “Below Deck” and her sister Michelle Dunham, founder of the Jacksonville School for Autism, serving as godmothers.

Celebrity Ascent is the fourth Edge class cruise ship to join Celebrity Cruises fleet. The vessel is poised to launch from Fort Lauderdale on December 3, 2023.

Celebrity Ascent has the capacity to accommodate 3,260 passengers and features several redesigned areas, including Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, the multi-level Eden, and the champagne culture-inspired Cosmopolitan restaurant. Accommodations are a highlight, with the unique Infinite Balcony cabins that merge indoor and outdoor spaces and the luxurious Iconic Suites that offer private Jacuzzis.

The Edge Villas provide two-level suites with private plunge pools for those seeking ultimate luxury.

One of the ship’s unique features is the Magic Carpet, a movable deck that serves multiple purposes, including a restaurant, bar, and embarkation area. The Rooftop Garden combines green space with live music and movie dining experiences, creating a unique ambiance.

The ship’s maiden voyage will include stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

After its debut, Celebrity Ascent will spend the rest of 2023 and winter 2024 sailing week-long cruises from Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades, alternating between Western and Eastern Caribbean routes. The vessel will head to Europe during the summer of 2024 offering Mediterranean cruises.

The Celebrity Ascent is a 141,420 gross tons vessel measuring 1,073 feet in length. The cruise ship was built at Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, with the first steel cut in November 2021.
