Celebrity Cruises Christens Celebrity Ascent
Celebrity Cruises officially introduced its newest luxury cruise ship, the Celebrity Ascent, into its esteemed fleet. The christening ceremony marks a significant milestone for the cruise line as it welcomes its fourth Edge-class vessel.
The christening ceremony at Port Everglades was a spectacular event that showcased the ship’s grandeur and the cruise line’s commitment to innovation in maritime travel.
One of the most notable aspects of the christening ceremony was the introduction of the vessel’s co-Godmothers, Captain Sandy Yawn, a star of Bravo TV’s ‘Below Deck,’ and her sister Michelle Dunham, Founder of the Jacksonville School for Autism. The godmothers officially named the ship in a traditional maritime manner by breaking a champagne bottle on its hull.
The ship’s co-captains were also in attendance for the event, brothers Captain Dimitrios Kafetzis and Captain Tasos Kafetzis, marking a first for both the line and the industry.
Celebrity Ascent is the first cruise ship in the world to have two godmothers who are sisters and two captains who are brothers.
“Celebrity Ascent has been designed to feed our guests travel wanderlust and provide unique experiences they will covet and love,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, President at Celebrity Cruises. “Captain Sandy and her sister Michelle, co-Godmothering Celebrity Ascent, add another, and more personal dimension, to this already extraordinary ship. Their connection, combined with the brotherly bond of the ship’s captains, exemplifies the sense of welcome and warm hospitality we strive for on every cruise.”
The Celebrity Ascent, the latest addition to the Edge-class series, is a testament to modern cruise ship design. With a passenger capacity of 3,260 and weighing 140,600 gross tons, the vessel was handed over to Celebrity Cruises on November 8, 2023, following a series of shakedown cruises.
Celebrity Ascent is the fourth ship in the Edge-class series, following Celebrity Edge (2018), Celebrity Apex (2020), and Celebrity Beyond (2022). This vessel is approximately 20 meters longer than the original Celebrity Edge, offering more space, particularly on the outside decks.
The ship’s design includes distinctive features like The Retreat, an exclusive resort area for suite guests, an expanded Rooftop Garden and Resort Deck with cantilevered float pools, a multi-level Sunset Bar, and an extensive onboard entertainment program.
“With each new ship, our ambition is to debut the ultimate vacation experience and Celebrity Ascent achieves this by raising the bar for premium travel,”said Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group. “Her elevated design and new onboard experiences set her apart from competitors and serve as a new benchmark for the travel industry.”
Laura Hodges Bethge, President at Celebrity Cruises, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the ship’s design to feed guests’ travel wanderlust with unique experiences.
The ship’s inaugural season will sail the Caribbean from Port Everglades, offering various Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises until late April 2024. Following this, Celebrity Ascent will head to the Mediterranean for summer sailings from Barcelona and Rome.
Celebrity Ascent’s entry into service signifies a new era in luxury cruising, offering unparalleled experiences and amenities and setting a new benchmark for premium travel.
After its inaugural voyage, Celebrity Ascent will offer various Bahamas sailings through April before crossing the Atlantic, offering Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona and Rome with several 7 to 12-night itineraries.
