Discovery Princess Completes Sea Trials

The newest upcoming ship for Princess Cruises, Discovery Princess, recently completed her 5-day sea trials in advance of her scheduled March 2022 debut. Sea trials are part of the final phase of a cruise ship’s construction to test the operational status of the vessel before delivery to the cruise line.

The ship is currently under construction at the Fincantieri Shipyard in Monfalcone, in northeastern Italy. The sea trials push the ship to its limits and ensure it operates properly under real-life conditions. The sea trials include tests of the ship’s steering, navigation, engines, and propulsion to ensure she is ready for final delivery.

The successful completion of sea trials is a significant milestone for any cruise ship and brings the vessel one step closer to completion. Upon the conclusion of her sea trials, Discovery Princess returned to the shipyard to receive the final finishing details.

The 145,000-gross ton cruise ship is Princess Cruises’ sixth and final Royal-class ship. The vessel shares the same style and similar layout as her sister’s ships Enchanted, Sky, Majestic, Regal, and Royal Princess.

The vessel has a passenger capacity of 3,660 and will provide an incredible experience for passengers of all ages.

Guests booked in the luxurious Sky Suites will have access to the largest balconies at sea, as well as a private master bathroom, upgraded linens, dedicated service, reserved show seatings, and more.

Other standout features include The Sanctuary adults-only retreat, two deep-tank pools, an infinity pool, the Lotus Spa, Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria specialty restaurant, Chocolate Journeys, and The Salty Dog Gastropub.

Discovery Princess is the third ship in the cruise lines fleet built with MedallionClass Technology in mind. Guests can use the wearable Medallion device for contactless boarding, locating friends and family around the ship, onboard food delivery, and more.

Comedy shows, live music, guest entertainers, a jazz lounge, and mesmerizing new Broadway-style production shows give passengers plenty of entertainment options throughout every voyage.

California Debut in 2022

Discovery Princess is scheduled to debut at the Port of Los Angeles on March 27, 2022. The ship will offer a series of Mexican Riviera and California Coast itineraries before heading up the Pacific coast to begin a season of seven-night Alaskan cruises from Seattle, Washington.

What’s Next for Princess Cruises

While Discovery Princess marks the last Royal-class vessel for the cruise line, they aren’t slowing down. Princess Cruises is already moving forward on their highly anticipated Sphere class of ships which are already under construction.

The first Sphere-class vessel is scheduled to debut in November 2023. The estimated 175,000 gross ton ships will be the largest in Princess Cruises’ fleet and the first LNG-powered ships for the cruise line.
