MSC Cruises has announced a new contest that allows artists, creatives, and cruisers to design the artwork that will feature on the hull of MSC Euribia.

MSC Cruises created the contest to communicate and highlight the importance of respect for the environment. MSC Euribia is the most environmentally friendly ship in MSC’s fleet and emphasizes the companies goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2050. MSC Euribia is named after the ancient goddess of Eurybia, who was the goddess of power over, and mastery of the sea.

Designing an Inpirational Hull

The contest opened on October 26, 2021, and will be judged by a panel of international including artist Jben, architect Martin Francis, and MSC Group Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago.

The competition asks artists to create a unique design inspired by the seas and the essential marine ecosystem. The winner’s artwork will be featured as a permanent design across the hull of MSC Euribia, while five additional finalists will have their designs displayed in an exhibition on board.

“The winning design will be yet another sign of our ongoing commitment to protecting the oceans and achieving net-zero operations, an ambitious goal that we have set for ourselves to reach by 2050 or sooner. Through this contest, MSC Euribia will be proudly showcasing this important message of our commitment on her hull for all to see as she sails the world,”

Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Group Executive Chairman

A Focus on the Environment

MSC Euribia is scheduled to enter service in 2023 and become the second LNG (liquefied natural gas)-powered ship in the cruise line’s fleet, opposed to traditional diesel-powered ships. LNG plays a vital role in the journey towards climate change mitigation with the benefit of lower emissions and quieter operation engines. Using LNG technology, Euribia’s engines can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 21 percent compared to standard fuels.

The vessel will also utilize a next-generation advanced wastewater treatment system and an underwater radiated noise management system to minimize the effects of vibration on marine life.
