Royal Caribbean International takes delivery of the world's largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas.
The Icon of the Seas features unique amenities like the AquaDome, seven pools, six waterslides, and eight distinct neighborhoods.
This environmentally responsible ship is powered by LNG as part of Royal Caribbean's initiative towards a net-zero cruise ship by 2035.
In a historic event at the Meyer Turku shipyard, Royal Caribbean International celebrated the delivery of the much-anticipated Icon of the Seas, marking a new era in cruise vacations. After an extensive journey of over seven years of planning and 900 days of meticulous design and construction, Royal Caribbean has officially added the groundbreaking vessel to its fleet.
Royal Caribbean marked the milestone delivery in a ceremony held just two months before the ship’s debut in Miami in January 2024.
Key figures were in attendance, like Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty and Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, alongside Meyer Turku CEO Tim Meyer. They were joined by over 1,200 crew members and workers in this significant milestone.
Jason Liberty expressed the monumental achievement as a celebration of Royal Caribbean’s 50-year legacy of innovation and the creation of the ultimate vacation experience. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts in making Icon of the Seas a reality, highlighting the ship’s potential to create lasting memories for countless families and vacationers.
“Today, we are celebrating more than a new ship; it’s also the celebration of the culmination of more than 50 years of innovation and dreaming at Royal Caribbean to create the ultimate vacation experience,”said Liberty.
“Delivering Icon of the Seas represents all that can be accomplished with strong partnerships and a commitment to delivering memorable vacations responsibly, and we thank Meyer Turku and an incredible village of skilled partners for joining us on this journey.”
Michael Bayley, Royal Caribbean International’s President and CEO, reminisced about the seven-year journey from an ambitious idea to a tangible, exceptional vacation experience. He emphasized the ship’s unique offerings tailored to all types of families and adventurers.
Icon of the Seas sets itself apart with its unparalleled amenities and architectural feats. The ship boasts the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure ever installed on a cruise ship, and an impressive array of water features, including seven pools and six record-breaking waterslides.
The ship’s eight distinct neighborhoods offer a myriad of experiences. Highlights include Thrill Island with the Category 6 waterpark, Chill Island with four unique pools, and Surfside, a neighborhood specifically designed for young families. AquaDome offers a transformative day-to-night experience with panoramic ocean views, while The Hideaway features the first suspended infinity pool at sea.
Icon of the Seas also showcases environmental responsibility, being the first Royal Caribbean ship that can be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). It incorporates dual-fuel engines and a series of energy efficiency initiatives, aligning with Royal Caribbean Group’s goal for a net-zero cruise ship by 2035.
Adventurers can embark on 7-night Eastern or Western Caribbean adventures from Miami, featuring stops at idyllic Caribbean destinations and the award-winning Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas. Starting in January 2024, guests can also enjoy Hideaway Beach, an exclusive adults-only escape on the private island.
“The memories millions of families and vacationers will make on Icon will be our greatest accomplishment yet,”said Liberty.
Icon of the Seas is not just a cruise ship; it’s a testament to Royal Caribbean’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and providing unforgettable vacation experiences. As it sets sail for its inaugural journey, it promises to redefine what it means to get away, whether for families, couples, or solo adventurers.
